Deep Energy Reductions - The Thousand Home Challenge

Americans cannot reduce their collective carbon footprint to sustainable levels unless they drastically reduce the energy use of existing homes, which accounts for 21 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Toward that end, Affordable Comfort launched the Thousand Home Challenge, which is designed to:
• Reduce total annual site energy consumption of existing North American homes by at least 75 percent.
• Apply indicators of home energy performance that are readily measurable and verifiable, and accommodate a wide range of climates, housing types, and fuels.
• Exemplify a performance-based systems approach to improving the comfort, safety, air quality, efficiency and durability of homes.
• Demonstrate deep energy reductions through a combination of efficiency measures, renewable sources, community-based solutions, and behavioral choices.
• Assemble regional collaboratives for achieving deep energy reductions in existing homes.
• Stimulate collaboration, networking, creative problem-solving, economic and workforce development, and innovative approaches to transforming the North American housing stock.

In this class Linda Wigington introduces the Thousand Home Challenge, Deep Energy Reductions, and the NorCal Collaborative. Find out why and how deep energy reductions can be the framework to guide investment in existing homes and ultimately lead to transformation of our housing stock.

Participants should have a basic understanding of residential building science and home performance and a keen interest in taking residential energy retrofits beyond business as usual and/or achieving local and state greenhouse gas reduction goals. Linda Wigington is the founder of and has been associated with the ACI (Affordable Comfort) Conference since its inception in 1986 and serves as special projects director. She has been a technical consultant for residential utility programs throughout the country. Linda serves on the Editorial Board of Home Energy magazine and in the past was an advisor for Habitat for Humanity International's Green Team. She received the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy's 2002 Champion of Energy Efficiency Award. Her current interest is demonstrating the feasibility of achieving deep energy reductions in existing dwellings through the North American Thousand Home Challenge.

David Wylie is a Registered Professional Engineer in California who completed engineering school at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and, because of his interest in cost analysis, completed his MBA at National University. He and his two partners began working together in the firm of ASW Engineering Management Consultants in 1976, and today they work actively with a staff of over 25 on energy engineering projects ranging from research, development, program design, measurement, and analysis, to feasibility studies of electrical/mechanical systems and energy supply for commercial and industrial facilities.

Mr. Wylie also holds a college teaching credential and has developed 20+ courses that address energy-efficiency systems which he teaches regularly for all the major California utility companies and many private company groups as well. He has an ability to take sophisticated engineering concepts and relate them in a way that both lay people and professionals can understand as he presents the materials in a practical way. Several of Mr. Wylie's articles have been published in trade magazines, and he has written a book titled New Refrigerants for Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems that was published in 1996. ASW Engineering has received awards for innovations in engineering from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Southern California Edison, and California's former Governor. He is presently the President of the Southern California Association of Professional Energy Managers.

In this one-day class we will provide hands-on training and exercises on the proper methods for checking charge and measuring air flow for residential and small commercial air conditioners and heat pumps. We will review the basics of the refrigeration cycle and discuss in detail the three methods of charging systems: charging by superheat with fixed orifice metering devices; charging by subcooling with thermostatic expansion valve metering devices; and weighing in the charge. Home performance contractors need to understand the basics of good mechanical system sizing, design, equipment selection, and installation. This class covers critical factors necessary to ensure the lowest operating cost and highest degree of comfort for occupants. Performance targets include conditioning costs of 10-25 cents per square foot, uniform room to room and ceiling to floor temperatures, quiet operation, and improved indoor air quality.

Gavin Healy has worked in residential remodeling for the past 12 years, with a focus on fixing houses that are 75 years old or older. In 2006, Gavin co-founded Balance Point Home Performance (with Dan Perunko) and has since been running a successful full service home performance analysis, retrofit and consulting company. Gavin is a trainer with CBPCA.org and a Building Performance Institute test proctor. Gavin enjoys making existing houses perform better than typical new construction. His goal as a trainer is to get individual contractors and companies to focus on the details that measurably affect a building's efficiency, comfort, and cost of operation.

Dan Perunko has worked in construction-related fields for 20 years, and he has 10 years experience renovating residential buildings. In 2006 he co-founded (with Gavin Healy) Balance Point Home Performance Inc., a home performance testing and retrofit company in Nevada County, California. He is also a trainer for CBPCA (California Building Performance Contractors Association) and test proctor for BPI (Building Performance Institute). Dan has a BA in psychology and a MA emphasizing experiential education. He brings skills gained in his education to his home performance training.

Marshall Hunt has worked for over 33 years to improve the energy efficiency of the built environment. He graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of California at Davis in Atmospheric Science with an emphasis in Arctic Air/Ice interactions. As a Professional Mechanical Engineer, CA #024975, and a B and C20 Heating and Cooling Contractor, CA # 707828, he has experience and expertise in heating and cooling system design of forced air systems, geothermal systems, radiant systems and solar systems. He has taught the Air Conditioning Contractors of America residential design course across the United States, presently teaches it at the PG&E Energy Training Center at Stockton, and provides technical support to PG&E's Mass Market Program. He is the Director of the Yolo Energy Efficiency Project, a third party energy efficiency program serving Yolo County, implemented by the City of Davis under a contract with PG&E. He leads the California Energy Commission Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Super Efficient Gas Water Heater Appliance Initiative.
